By air: It is a 2.5 hour flight from Sydney and 1.5 hour flight from Brisbane. A catamaran departs twice daily from Shute Harbour for a 35 minute transfer to Hamilton Island.

To get to the Whitsundays by road: From the north, driving time from Cairns is 8 hours and 3 hours from Townsville. From the south, Rockhampton is 6.5 hours by road.
