Experience the majesty of Aoraki Mt Cook and the sweeping tussocklands of the Mackenzie Basin in this 5 day cycling trip in a Christchurch to Christchurch loop.

Day 1: Christchurch to Tekapo | Up to 50 kms

Your first day is spent cycling the quiet sealed roads of New Zealand. Enjoy lunch at a local winery and a photo stop at St Davids Church at Raincliff close to the rides end. Once the cycling is over, relax in one of the local hot pools at Lake Tekapo.

Day 2: Tekapo to Twizel | Up to 40 kms

Drive or walk to the summit of nearby Mt John – an ideal spot to view today and tomorrow’s rides. From Tekapo hydro canal, you will enjoy the flat easy ride, which takes you past ever expanding salmon farms to the edge of Lake Pukaki and a ride on the lakeside cycling trail. Upon arrival to the Hermitage, you will choose the next activity - visit to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre (own expense) and the local conservation center OR walk to a nearby viewpoint for stunning views of the 26 km long Tasman Glacier and Mt Cook. That evening, take in the town of Twizel, a holiday and rowing destination, surrounded by rolling tussock hillsides.

Day 3: Twizel to Kurow | Up to 40-50 kms

As you continue on your path, the scenery is impressive all the way. Going through the back roads to Twizel, you will visit a nearby conservation center to learn about one of NZ’s most endangered bird species. From the conservation center, a downhill cycle takes you to the majestic Aviemore dam. A beautiful sealed lakeside road will keep you entertained before you have a short drive to your accommodation in the small village of Kurow. Kurow is worth exploration by bike. Travel from the historic bridge over the Waitaki River to the beautifully restored St. Albans Church, and then continue to the local Pasquale vineyards to taste some award winning wines.

Day 4: Kurow to Oamaru | Optional 40–60kms

Moving inland, you start the morning cycling on quiet rural roads and visit the large formation of weathered limestone rocks, better known as the Elephant Rocks. Riding on the prime cycle roads in NZ, enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach before completing the ride on a scenic coastal road into Oamaru. The beautifully restored historic Oamaru Victorian quarter is home to Steam Punk and in season features street actors providing entertainment, local crafts, cafes and bars. In the evening you will visit the famous blue penguin colony to view the penguins returning to their nest after a long day of food gathering.

Day 5: Oamaru to Christchurch | Up to 40 kms

You will start the day with rural cycling as you have the option to visit the award winning Whitestone Cheese factory and Riverstone Kitchen, NZ’s restaurant of the year! Cycle along the Pareora river valley and challenge yourself over Pareora George to witness the spectacular St Davids Pioneer Church. A final burst of cycling takes you to a late lunch at Pleasant Point and the start of the final drive back to Christchurch.
